Minutes:

The Committee considered an update on the development of the Tourism Strategy and action plan for tourism delivery in the High Peak over the next five years.  A copy of the draft Strategy was appended to the report.

It was commented that a strategy of this nature can assist in future funding applications and in the making of strategic links to Visit Peak District.  It was a long term Strategy which would be refreshed and developed and is important for the visitor economy of the area.

Members commented that in view of the length of the document, it would be helpful if a short summary could be produced which sets out the key issues.

Concern was expressed regarding the lack of reference to Chapel en le Frith within the Strategy, and members were advised that although certain areas had been prioritised, Chapel en le Frith had been included in the specific actions to implement the strategies (along with practical examples), and would still have the same opportunities to bid for funding as other areas.

The view was expressed that there is a need to balance the tourism industry with the needs of local people, and specific reference was made to seasonal, often low paid employment and the numbers of holiday cottages and Air B&B lets in the area.  The Executive Councillors outlined other initiatives that the Council is involved in to ensure a balance between visitors and residents including refreshing the Growth Strategy.  Reference was also made to a piece of work being done by Visit Peak District around increasing pay and skill progression.  More information around Air B&B would be presented as part of the Local Plan Review, together with any options to control the numbers in the area.

It was requested that the use of council owned buildings and land for community use should be included in the action plan.  Reference was also made to possible future developments around the Devonshire Dome, Buxton Opera House and various projects in Glossop.

RESOLVED:

1.     That the Executive be recommended to approve the draft version of the Strategy for publication;

2.     That the actions taken for the effective delivery of the Strategy, be noted.
